From its early days, the Y’s mission was to “meet the young stranger” and surround him with good influences. In 1869 in Honolulu, “strangers” included newcomers, plantation laborers, and youth living in O‘ahu’s most isolated communities. 150 years later, the Y continues to provide lasting personal and social change by providing innovative, collaborative and effective solutions.

At the Y, children realize their potential, families are strengthened, people are empowered to be healthier in mind, spirit, and body. Here, all are welcomed embraced and supported.

“I suppose I have been connected with the Nu‘uanu YMCA ever since I was born...I was born on Emma Street, just a few steps away from the corner of Vineyard and Fort....the areas surrounding the old Nu‘uanu Y would have been considered... breeding ground for crime and delinquency, but thanks to the Nu‘uanu Y, these statistics were kept at a very low margin... Were it not for the ‘Y,’ I might, like some of our less fortunate in Hawai‘i, be carrying a prison number after my name instead of the title, ‘United States Senator.’” —Dan Inouye
